Due to its four seasons, New England is known for its various activities. This region is also enjoyable to visit during the winter season. If you’re not a fan of skiing, consider taking advantage of the many other activities that New England offers. These include ice skating, snow tubing, and relaxing spa treatments. You’ll also find plenty of great regional restaurants that serve seasonal food.

Waitsfield, VT

One of the best areas for skiers in Vermont is Waitsfield. This town is home to the Sugarbush Ski Resort and Mad River Glen. Compared to other areas in the state, it tends to see fewer people and has a more rural feel.

One of my favorite places to visit in the Mad River Valley is Waitsfield. Although it’s smaller than other areas, such as Stowe, it has a charming Main Street and is home to the American Flatbread Company. This area is known for its warm winter atmosphere.

While you’re not skiing, try some nearby locations offering winter massage services. If you’re a fan of outdoor winter activities like ice skating and snowshoeing, you’ll want to visit Waitsfield.

North Conway, NH

North Conway has been named one of the best ski towns in North America. Located in the White Mountains, it’s perfect for a winter getaway in New England.

In North Conway, you’ll find a charming Main Street home to Zeb’s General Store. You’ll additionally want to visit the Bavarian Chocolate Haus to experience their unique chocolate creations.

One unique activity you can do in the area during the winter is visiting the Mount Washington Valley’s Chocolate Festival. During this event, local businesses create special chocolate treats available on the trails throughout the area. If you’re not a fan of snowshoeing or skiing, you can still visit the stops and enjoy the chocolate creations.

North Conway is also home to some of New Hampshire’s best skiing, and it’s located near the Cranmore Mountain resort. If you don’t want to spend the day skiing, head to Nestlebrook Farm for some of its best-in-the-nation ice skating, snowshoeing, and sleigh rides.

Freeport, ME

Another place in Maine that’s ideal for people who are looking to balance their outdoor activities with a stay in a quaint and warm town is Freeport. This town is known for its welcoming atmosphere and is a great place to celebrate the season.

You’ll want to explore the various shops and restaurants on Main Street in Freeport. The L.L. Bean Flagship Campus is also a must-visit for those looking to stock up on their winter essentials. After a long day of skiing, you can grab a bite at the local restaurant, The Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro.

There are plenty of snowshoeing and cross-country trails to explore when you’re ready to get outside. You can also take a scenic sleigh ride with the carousel horse farm.

If you’re planning on visiting Freeport during February, then make sure that you get the most out of your trip by seeing the Flavors of Freeport, an event showcasing the best of Maine’s local chefs. Other events are happening in the town, such as the Freeport Foodie Lotto and the Frosty Frolic.

Rangeley, ME

Rangeley, also known for its skiing, is a great place to stay during your winter vacation. If you’re looking for something a bit different, there are plenty of activities for everyone in the area.

Head to the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center for more than 30 miles of groomed cross-country trails. If you’re a fan of snowmobiles, then you’ll want to check out the area’s many snowmobile rental facilities. After exploring the area, head to the local restaurant, The Gingerbread House, to enjoy a warm meal.

Mystic, CT

Another excellent winter town in New England is Mystic, located in Connecticut. Although it’s known for its summer attractions, it’s also a great place to visit during winter. During this time of year, you’ll likely see fewer people in the area and have the opportunity to take in more of its beautiful views.

During the winter season, you’ll be able to visit Mystic and spend a lot of time shopping. There are a variety of great shops on Main Street in the town, as well as a fun little area known as the Old Mystik Village.

While in the Old Mystik Village, make sure you take a break from the shopping to enjoy some hot chocolate from one of the shops in the area. If you’re in the mood for something more unique, head to Alice in the village for a fun afternoon tea.

In addition to great shopping, dining is also a great way to spend some time in Mystic. You can enjoy a great meal at the S&P Oyster restaurant or treat yourself to a spa treatment at the nearby Norwich Inn.
